Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 1 cup heavy cream (for frosting)
  • ½ cup powdered sugar (for frosting)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon.
  3. In another bowl, mix milk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla until smooth.
  4. Gradually combine wet ingredients with dry ingredients—mix on low speed until just combined.
  5. Slowly add hot water to the batter; fold in chocolate chips if desired.
  6. Divide the batter evenly between prepared pans and bake for 40-50 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Cool cakes in their pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. For frosting, whip together heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla until stiff peaks form.
  9. Once cooled, layer with frosting between the cakes and coat the outside evenly.
  10. Decorate with chocolate shavings or cinnamon as desired.
