  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 5 oz bittersweet chocolate, chopped
  • Black gel icing color
  • Red gel icing color
  • 2 1/4 cups unsalted butter for frosting
  • 8 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 cup natural unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract for frosting
  • 57 tbsp water or cream for frosting
  • 1/4 tsp salt for frosting
  • 4 oz red candy melts for decoration
  • 2 tbsp heavy whipping cream for decoration

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare two 9-inch round cake pans by greasing them and lining with parchment paper.
  2. In one bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and vegetable oil until smooth. Gradually add sugar, beating until fluffy.
  4. Add eggs one at a time, followed by vanilla extract.
  5. Mix in buttermilk until combined. Gradually incorporate dry ingredients until just mixed.
  6. Divide half the batter; melt chocolate and mix with it along with black gel icing color.
  7. Spoon alternating dollops of black and red batter into prepared pans.
  8. Bake for about 20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool in pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks.
