Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp red food coloring (gel-based)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 1/2 cup red velvet cake crumbs
  • 1/3 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 34 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 23 tbsp milk or plant-based cream
  • A few drops of ivory or peach food coloring
  • Candy fangs or small drops of red vegan gelatin
  • Red syrup or edible red gel

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a muffin tin with paper liners.
  2. In a large bowl, cream softened butter and sugar until fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time, followed by vanilla and red food coloring.
  3. In another bowl, combine flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Gradually mix dry ingredients into the wet mixture alternating with buttermilk until just combined.
  4. Fill the muffin tin 2/3 full with batter and bake for 18-20 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack.
  5. Prepare the filling by mixing red velvet cake crumbs with sweetened condensed milk and melted butter until smooth. Hollow out cooled cupcakes and fill with this mixture.
  6. For frosting, beat softened butter, gradually adding powdered sugar and vanilla until smooth. Color to desired skin tone using food coloring.
  7. Frost each cupcake evenly and decorate with candy fangs or red syrup for effect.
