  • 1/2 cup sour cream (room temperature)
  • 1 cup butter (room temperature)
  • 1/2 cup shortening (Crisco)
  • 6 cups sifted powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (177°C) and prepare three 6-inch cake tins by greasing them and lining the bottoms with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together cake flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda; set aside.
  3. In another bowl, mix milk, sour cream, and vanilla; set aside.
  4. In a stand mixer or using a handheld mixer, cream the butter and sugar on medium speed until smooth and creamy.
  5. Gradually add egg whites while mixing on low speed until fully incorporated; then beat on high speed for an additional minute.
  6. Gradually incorporate half of the dry ingredients followed by half of the milk mixture until combined; repeat with remaining ingredients.
  7. Pour batter evenly into prepared pans and bake for 30–35 minutes until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  8. Cool cakes in pans for about 15 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
